A year slipped away by

My thoughts languished in the silence you left behind

A void where your laughter used to echo

Then, there you were, at the corner of familiar streets

You approached me

And even though I was pleasantly surprised

It seemed to me that you were a stranger in your skin

Your eyes, once bright with mischief,

Held a vacant stare

An open window to nowhere

Your voice

Staggered and despondent,

My greetings felt feeble and landed flat, without impact

Dumbfounded

Our close friend told me he saw you last week

Amongst the bright aisles of everyday things, I felt frigid

But the problem was

It was a humid spring afternoon

I could taste every degree of the overwhelming humidity

Physically here

But you’ve become a mirage to our memories

Are we standing on the edge of change?

Is it beyond our grasp?

Or within our reach?

Pensive, as I stare at sailboats race towards a sunset finish line

And valiantly protect our connection from fading
