Maturity is not the absence of mistakes, but having the strength to acknowledge them. You’ll need to reflect on past conflicts and rectify them through communication. Once you reach this point, you’ll have the clarity to use those changes as stepping stones to growth. -TheRhymeRula

Almost all conflicts stem from misunderstandings that become exacerbated when there is a failure of rationality. What inspired me to write this tweet was a video clip of an interview with acclaimed Hip Hop legend LL Cool J. During the interview he shared his thoughts about his rivalry with another MC (Canibus) and in retrospect, he admitted to not approaching the situation pragmatically because he reached the pinnacle of hip hop and felt invincible. Back then, he went on the defensive and thought he had to protect his legacy from any perceived threats, it’s just that this “threat” (it was admiration) to his artistry was possibly his way of keeping himself from being bored in the rap game. In light of this, we strive to protect the things we are passionate about, but some individuals fail to discern a situation properly and that can result in misinterpretations, misunderstandings, and ultimately conflicts. In terms of LL Cool J, he admitted in the interview that he was an egomaniac back in 1997, immature, and he impetuously misconstrued a fellow rapper’s reverence as a threat to his craft which subsequently commenced a battle that should have never happened. Nevertheless, this beef (conflict) made for an entertaining story.

All in all, by being patient, forgiving, and compassionate with ourselves, we can respond accordingly and appropriately because if not we’ll risk taking things out of context and possibly ruining relationships. Lastly, in due time we’ll eventually acknowledge our past mistakes and they should serve as invaluable lessons that will guide us towards personal growth. Additionally, having an open mind is necessary to achieve this. With that being said, let’s work on being open to accepting the truth and embrace it so that personal growth can manifest into a more fulfilling future. Also, let’s not turn innocuous situations into unnecessary drama.

  1. Particularly text, I think things get misunderstood so quickly and easily sometimes and it was partly the cause of my previous polyamory break-up. Still, even if I’ve forgiven the misunderstanding, there are other things that I can’t forgive. It’s hard and it hurts, but I have to move on now.
